Our Engagement Party

On Christmas Eve, we had an impromptu engagement party.

After 9 years, (the France Italy Penalty shootout of World Cup 98 comes to mind) Steph and I formally announced our engagement. Mum and Dad chose to give us a party as our engagement/Christmas present. And it seemed like the whole Chinese restaurant community was over to celebrate to enjoy Dad's cooking.

Ed and Dennis and his mates helped with the serving, Mum got to do a bit of mingling and help Dad, Trevor joined him in the kitchen (thanks Trev!) While Steph, Ian, Eleanor and I sat outside, and ate, drank and enjoyed the whole event. I admit I was feeling a bit guilty and couldn't truly enjoy myself.

Dad's cooking is always divine, I forgot to take shots of the food. I love his abalone and Chinese mushrooms and the way he does crayfish, and his roast pork and fresh roasted chicken and his shark fin soup... sigh so good.... (smiles dreamily) I think Steph managed to take a few photos but he was in a blissful state like me.

I decorated the restaurant for the occasion, I went to the Balloon Salon in Maroubra (first time I've driven the new car too! - very touchy and revved 1/4 of the tank of fuel to Maroubra and back) I was rather proud of my ceiling swirls and hearts, and the heart balloons we had on each table, you'll have to see the pics below.

For the Kids I found a packet of 3M Heart Shaped post it notes. told them to go wild - which they did all over the walls and somehow we managed to get them on the ceiling and later on into the night they landed on everyone's backs and clothes.

The Aunties were totally amazing, creating the most delicious engagement cake ever... (I simply do not know how I'm going to top, with a wedding cake.) There are photos of them making it. And everyone truly enjoyed it, in fact one of the Uncles asked to order one for THEIR engagement! In front of his wife, who found it very amusing.

We had a speech, Steph thanked everyone for coming, a few heckler uncles pestered him about Chinese. Then i had a go at the speech in canto.

Everyone had a toast then some cake and that's it, were officially engaged now with the blessing of both our parents. PHEW!

Bistro Lilly - Degustation

My birthday bash, had us going over to Bistro Lilys for some "Fine dining"

The food was nice but not jaw dropping, and getting champagne split on us wasn't exactly thrilling

The wines were perfectly matched with the courses. and my favourite course was the YUCATAN CHOCOLATE PUDDING.

Puppy Love and Sunday Tea

My work corridor lunch buddy has 3 minature schnauzers, Kita, Raffiki and Eden, and she had organised a Puppy afternoon tea with all her friends who also had minature schnauzers. Knowing my soft spot for animals, she invited me along to "borrow" a puppy to play with.

I am in love. Not only are Miniature Schnauzers so adoreable, theyre fun to play with, delicate takers, theyre small, solid and compact, and best of all they don't moult! (downside - they need hairdresser appointments as often as you do).

Here are some photos below.

I was in love with Hibu, the sweetest one of all, it would snuggle up to me and not let the other schnuzers near me... (might have something to do with the anzac cookie i had in my hand)
Hibu resting next to me...

Anyway it was a lovely tea party with lots of laughter and adorable fun.

Newtown Cocina

We joined Will and Angie for a mix-farewell/birthday party at Newtown Cocina.

I'm not a fan of Mexican food, but i was delighted with the servings and the taste!

Starting at 6pm, we attempted to drown ourselves with the Happy Hour with Magaritas and Daquries. I think i had 3 before we hit the food.

But the Food was amazing! Have to go back again!

Lunch - Pad Thai

Not the best Pad Thai I've ever had, they didn't serve the crushed peanuts so i took it back and watch the chef chuck a handful on rather disparagingly. The garlic-chili and the sugar was great to toss in and the hit of lemon juice (normally i miss this) added a nice zing

3 second memory

Last night Steph and I agreed to get a GPS unit for the new car...

Today, after work we went out to the Good Guys to buy it. But when we got there we couldn't figure out why we decided to buy it... so we drove out for dinner instead.

Work Christmas Dinner

For Christmas Lunch Work took us to the East Chinese Restaurant in Circular Quay (under the Toaster)

A Great People watching or Show Off location, with views of the Opera House, Bridge and Rocks and the food is pretty good too.

For Entree, there were Peking Duck Pancakes, Steamed Oysters and Battered Prawns.

For mains there was Crayfish with Garlic-Ginger *drool*, Beef with Wasabi Sauce, Salt and Pepper Prawns and Vegetables. There was also freshly steamed fish...

New Car

Its ours! We picked up our new car from Heartland Holden today.
Shiny, squeaky clean and with that (INHALE) new car smell, we drove it carefully home.

Here's the first pic.
"No one puts BEB in the corner"

Smaller than the beemer, there were some differences, for example the beemer 's large bonnet could be used to block sensors, and hence stop the Garage door from closing.

Please note the horror of sticking the bonnet of your brand new car under a top-closing garage door that show no sign of stopping is not for the faint hearted.

Spicy Sichuan Restaurant - Glebe

Tonight we joined Will and Winston to try out a new Sichuan Restaurant in Glebe - rather obviously called Spicy Sichuan Restaurant. (I suppose its to stop those unknowing foodies who are use to the cantonese style of cooking. - no wonton soup here mate!)

Steph isn't a fan of spicy food so we were pleasantly surprised with the cuisine, below are the photos taken with my unfashionable camera.

First photo is Crunchy Rice with Pork. Served in 2 separate, parts. the crunchy rice cakes in one platter and the sauce with thin slices of pork, black fungus and vegetables in a light sweet/sour sauce (minus the food colouring) was poured on top. The rice cakes snap and crackle merrily as the sauce is poured on.
Kung Pao Chicken - Winston and Steph disliked this dish intensely! We found that the sichuan peppercorns when cooked this way numb the tip of your tongue! Will and I had no issues, and ate until we could feel our tongues. Which is rather strange as I've used the spice in my own cooking but not had the numbing effect.

Snake Beans and Dumplings

Snake Beans and Dumplings were nice... Nothing to write home about.

Served in a pretty bamboo steamer is The Double Cooked pork with Preserved Veggies. This is so YUM! Layers of pork, neatly packed, covering a bed of fragrant Mui Choi! excellent with rice. I remember eating this at Auntie Angela and Uncle Harry's all the time as a kid.

The Dining Experience was nice, the decor very pretty, with old fashion dining chairs and tables. the crockery had emperor yellow design, and the teacups came with handles. However no napkins were provided so if you're going... BYO!

Here's my first set of photos from my new camera. Ive read some scathing reviews about it, but as the evidence shows, these pictures look good enough to eat!
